naïve 天然だ！

　naïveは日本語でも「ナイーヴ」。古仏語のnaïf（自然のまま、生まれつきの）が語源。“Lacking worldly experience and understanding”（世間的な経験や理解に欠ける）という意味で、同義語はsimple（単純）、innocent（無邪気な）、unsophisticated（世間ずれしてない）。だが、しばしばstupid（バカ）の婉曲表現として使われる。
　ブッシュ政権で副大統領を務めたディック・チェイニー氏が２０１１年8月30日に回顧録“In My Time”を出版。クリスチャン・サイエンスモニター（同日付）によると、“In the book, Cheney argues former Secretary of State Rice was naïve for trying to reach a nuclear weapons agreement with North Korea.”（その本の中で、チェイニー氏は、ライス前国務長官が北朝鮮と核兵器協定を結ぼうとしたのは〝天真爛漫〟だ、と皮肉った）という。
　ライス氏はこれに対し、"I don't appreciate the attack on my integrity that that implies."（暗にほのめかすような私への人格攻撃は評価しない）と反論した。integrityは、日本語に訳しにくい単語の１つ。語源はinteger（整数）と同じでwholeness（全体性）を指す。転じてsoundness of moral character（道徳的な高潔さ）、honesty（正直さ）をいう。ここでは、「人をバカにするのは許さないわ」というのを婉曲に言ったわけ。
　さて、英国のスカイ・ニュース（２０１１年９月１日付）によると、野党労働党のエド・ミリバンド党首はインタビューで、“The Government is ‘naïve’ to think the UK is safe from the problems facing the global economy.”（政府が、グローバル経済が直面する数々の問題から英国が安全であると考えているとすれば〝おめでたい〟）とキャメロン政権を批判。"Collective austerity, advocated by the UK Government, is too simplistic for the complex challenges the world faces." （世界が直面する複雑な課題に対して、英国政府が掲げる総合的緊縮政策は単純すぎる）と指摘した。simplisticもnaïveの同義語で、裏を返せば「単純バカ」と非難したことになる。
